Dundalk Learning Network (SIP059)

Dundalk Learning Network involves the use of web-based technologies to enhance communication between 17 local schools and between the schools and the wider community. The backbone of the project is a core of innovative technology solutions, housed in a framework called Wired for Learning, which is tailored specifically to address local needs.

| Project Aims |
- To enhance the educational experience for teachers, students, parents and the wider community.
- To explore the potential of ICT, and in particular Web-based technology, as a tool in developing educational resources and curriculum delivery generally.
- To develop the concept of the school as an outreach to the community and to enhance the participation of the wider community in school life.
- To develop the image of Dundalk as a showcase in the innovative use of technology.

| Indicative Outcomes |
- The project will create a technology infrastructure and establish the relevant supports to deliver a closed intranet for Dundalk.
- An effective technological infrastructure will be created in each of the project schools.
- A support centre for the project will be created in Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT).
- A curriculum development team will develop a series of curriculum initiatives.
- The project will record and disseminate good practice in using ICT in developing cross-curricular projects.
- Existing international links will be enhanced and new ones will be developed with a view to sharing experiences, models of curriculum integration, and other resources.
- To maximise the benefits to the project schools and to the wider community, the project will develop a means by which local businesses can use the DLN for advertising, communication, sharing information, and other general use.
- A model will be developed to facilitate the addition of other schools to the project once the pilot phase has been completed.
