Book Reviews

The book review project provided students with books to read. In return they were excepted to write a book review using a template. The book reviews were then published on one of the Scoilnet discussions fora.

The first review activity involved the six novels shortlisted for the Booker prize in October 2000.

These were

  • Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee (winner of the Booker Prize)
  • The Map of Love by Ada Soueif
  • Fasting, Feasting by Anita Desai
  • Headlong by Michael Frayn
  • Our Fathers by Andrew O'Hagan
  • The Blackwater Lightship by Colm Tóibín

Each of these books was read and reviewed by a second level student. The short time available, little more than a fortnight, and the quality of the reviews produced showed that students are well able to read and critique literature of the highest calibre.

The second review activity involved sets of books accessed from a variety of sources

The MidWest Development Education Centre, Limerick, provided class sets of books with multicultural themes.

Kilkenny Library provided books of Kilkeny College

Kennys, a Letterkenny bookshop donated books to Loreto School for the reading review project

Puffin Books have provided review copies of their books for use by the project.
