Using Native Resources
The “Collery Furniture”,
for example, the timber for propping up the mines was taken from Gallinastown in
the Southeast of the estate. It was also taken from Ballyroe in Swifts Heath
which is in the southwest of the Barony. Iron from open casting at Crutt, and at
the Hill was used in the making of iron tools used in the coal mines. It was
also used in the bottoming of water barrels. The iron from the iron mines was
used to the benefit of the miners. Wood from the mature woods in the area was
also used. The natural resources of the area were utilised to develop the coal
industry.
