Local history project by pupils of St. Patrick's B.N.S, Castlebar

Why was it called the 'Races of Castlebar'?

It was named the 'Races of Castlebar' because the soldiers were running so fast chasing each other out of Castlebar.
Why did the French come to Castlebar? The French came here because they were driven here from North Mayo by the British forces. They came to help the Irish to fight against the British soldiers.

Why did we want to find out about the Races of Castlebar?

Lots of the places around Castlebar have unusual names like Frenchhill, Gallows hill, Staball hill, and we wanted to find out why they were called these names.

Click here to find out how some of them got their names.
