Interesting facts about Castlebar placenames

Gallows Hill is very near our school. From the name, there must have been some kind of hanging place there at the time but we can't find out much about it!

NewAntrim street got its name when many people from Antrim came to Castlebar before 1798.

Linenhall street was named after the linenhall there, which was where the linen weavers would sell the linen they'd made. The linen was made in their houses in NewAntrim street. The industry lasted for about thirty years.
The Linenhall is now an arts centre and coffee shop.

Spencer Street was named after one of the descendants of Lady Diana Spencer.
