How many people died during the famine in Ireland?

It is estimated that about a million died during the famine years in Ireland. People were still dying from famine up to seven years later.
How many Irish people emigrated to America during the famine? About 1.6 million people left Ireland for America between 1845 and 1848 but because of sickness many of them didn't make it all the way. The ships they travelled in became known as 'coffin ships' because so many died on them.
