Why did some of the workers in Castlebar Hat factory have to wear clogs?

Click here to read what we discovered about the Hat factory.

The workers in the dyehouse had to wear clogs to protect their feet from the acid which was used to clean the insects out of the wool. Some of them got badly burned from the acid. They made the clogs in the carpentry shop in the factory.

Why did the Castlebar river change a different colour nearly every day? When they dyed the wool to make the hats in the hat factory, the dye was pumped into the nearby river and changed the colour of the water. It must of been very dangerous for the fish in the river.
