The Stone circle is one of the best known megalithlic sites in Ireland consisting of two large standing stones, stone circle and a stone cairn. They were built in the late bronze age about 2;000 years ago. They were used for religious Ceremonies. It was used as an astronomical calendar by our ancient ancestors who were just as intellectually gifted
as man
today. There is
an old
saying that
if you pick flower
around it a
fairy will come
down and
haunt while sleeping. If you walk through the six stones in Kealkil stone circle you will be haunted. Long ago mass used to be said there too. In 1932 it was excavated by the Office Of Public Works in search of hidden objects underneath but they found nothing. It belongs to the office of Public Works it can not be interfered with it ; if you were caught touching it you would be carried to court and you would be put to jail. There are eight stone circles in Cork.The stones circles are located in Cappaboy beg’Cousane’Derringfinchin’Cappaboy more’kealkil and Maunghanclew.The most impressive one
