Present School - 5 teachers - 141 pupils.

1. The present school took approximately one year to build.
2. The opening was delayed for six months due to a cement strike.
3. It opened in 1971, on the same day as the Garda Station.
4. John Clifford was the Principal at the time. Mr. Pat Carroll is Principal now.
5. About 170 children attended the school on opening day.
6. It brought two main changes in the area, new houses were built and many emigrants also returned to Portroe village.
7. Mrs. O’Shea is the only teacher on the present staff who has been in both in the old and present school.
8. A boy once broke his leg in the school.
9. The ballcourt was added in 1995.
10. A classroom assistant has recently been acquired for Junior Infants.
11. The school’s biggest achievement is providing the inhabitants with a good standard of education.
12. One of the most successful changes that has brought improvements to the school is when FÁS began providing a caretaker and secretary.
13. The Australian Ambassador’s wife visited the school some years ago.
14. An inspector comes regularly - with a special exam every four years.
15. The OPW, medical staff and representatives of book suppliers are just some of the people who generally visit the school.
16. A rockery and garden have been built recently. This was praised by the Tidy Towns examiners.
17. We got all the classrooms and hall carpeted. We also got new double glazed windows last year.
18. We play hurling, football and basketball.
19. There is a hall for PE on rainy days.
