School: Rice College, CBS, New Road, Ennis, Co. Clare. SIP081

Class Involved: 1st Year Students 2000-2001 - 2nd Year Students 2001-2002 Class 1.2 Class 2.2

Project Interpretation:
The students involved in the SIP project had to choose a science project from any aspect of science they had studied in the first term of their initial year of secondary school.

Goals:
Use of ICT as a medium for teachers to assess and students to display their knowledge of the scientific theories and skills gained in the science laboratory.
To develop skills and a medium so that students can cross -communicate both by e-mail and chat with students in other schools.

Approach:
The students were taught how to use presentation software, Microsoft Powerpoint, in their weekly IT class.
Scientific theory and techniques were studied during students normal science classes.
After MS Powerpoint, the collaborative software FirstClass was introduced to the students along with Internet Research, Digital camera, Scanner and Printing skills

Outcomes:
The students displayed their work in a visually stimulating manner using PowerPoint from which the teacher assessed their understanding of the concepts taught, corrections were made of any misconceptions. Project work was uploaded and shared with other students internally and from other schools. This encouraged further learning in similar and foreign areas of science. FirstClass email and chat proved extremely popular with students in and amongst schools.

Obstacles:
Students did not have full access to a dedicated IT lab because of space restrictions within the school. Students had only one IT class per week while they had four science classes per week.

Internal Dissemination:
Students got a chance to display their onerous work to parents and peers on a dissemination evening in the school on Tuesday the 12th March 2002. The evening involved a display of their work on coloured charts, bound copies of project work, and on FirstClass as Powerpoint presenations

Collaborative Dissemination:
All students & teachers got a chance to display their onerous work to the public parents and peers on a dissemination day in the school on Thursday the 16th March 2002. The day involved a display of their work on coloured charts, bound copies of project work, and on FirstClass as Powerpoint presenations

Conclusion:
Use of IT to enhance the learning and understanding of science as well as collaboration among and between schools.
